After two non-playoff seasons and resoundingly horrible play, the Carolina Hurricanes hockey club retained the services of Paul Maurice, a career sub-.500 coach and noted best friend of General Manager Jim Rutherford. In the build-up to the 2011-2012 NHL season, both Mr. Rutherford as well as majority owner Peter Karamanos stated the players on the team had the look of playoff contenders. Right out of the gate, the 'Canes lost their first game at home in grand fashion, and as of November 15 have won just 3 out of their last 12 games. Their All-Star center, Eric Staal, is undergoing the worst start to his NHL career, and their All-Star goalie, Cam Ward, has regressed badly. With a handful of exceptional individual efforts, the entire team is playing well below expectations with several recent blowout losses at home. The team has given up; we, the fans, however, have not. It is crystal clear that the number one way to immediately improve the fortunes of this team is to say farewell to Paul Maurice and his over-slotting of personal favorites and burying of young talent on a non-existent fourth line. We, the undersigned, hereby petition Carolina Hurricanes management to immediately make a head coaching change before even more of the fan base are turned off by this team's continual downward spiral.
