I'm mostly signing this in order to make a comment and ask a Q. There is a compromise solution to the problem. Make the PR part of the school day. Shorten up the class periods, and start your PR outside at Noon-ish. This ensures there is no drugs/alcohol, the kids can be monitored, and every student is required to attend. You also get the benefit of having the full staff present to monitor. Simple and still fun.

This is straight bs. Absolute bs. Take away the best day of the school year why don't you. The truth is kids will always do drink/drug and canceling something that brings such a sense of community to the school won't stop that, so choose more effective ways to make your stupid point.

There's smarter ways to get a message across than throwing a tradition under the bus. Instead of fighting the student body and the community, the energy is probably better spent focusing on fighting the trend of drug abuse by helping the students who are abusing get the treatment they need.

Please don't Let the students suffer,by not having the pep rally.I know there was a handful of students who missed behave but the ones who are good students and know how to behave should not be punished. Another thought is the 12th graders missed out on the Washington DC trip in 8th grade. It's just another disappointment for them. Please take this all into consideration, and let the students have the pep rally this year. Thank you so much.

As a Miller Place alumni (Class of 1986) this breaks my heart--do you really think back then there weren't "incidents"? The students were handled properly and the rest of us didn't suffer the consequences of their bad decisions--the culpable party did. Granted, I don't know the exact nature of the situations but my children attended MP while ultimately graduating from SWR in '06 and '07 and both schools had their fair share of problems then but still were able to hold school spirit events like pep rallys. Don't take the good memories and support away from the majority of the kids that are doing the right thing.

Such a shame that a few bad kids will ruin something that is supposed to encourage school spirit, togetherness, and a sense of community pride. Canceling the rally does not encourage positive behavior. Are they going for irony by making a poor decision and canceling the pep rally to discourage poor decisions... or what? That just seems ridiculous and irresponsible to those that actually deserve to experience a pep rally. Perhaps consider stronger security or require a clean record for attendance, but canceling the entire event doesn't quite seem like a sensible decision. It's unfortunate some kids will miss out on what I thought, as a former mphs student, to be rather enjoyable.

Can't say I'm surprised. A few year ago a skit was done that referred to MP as the "land of no". You are teaching all the good students that their good decisions are worthless and go unrecognized because clearly a few bad eggs is enough to ruin the fun for everyone. All this is going to do is encourage those great kids to adapt an "if you can't beat them join them" mentality. I used to be so proud of being an MP Graduate from 2003 and I'm slowly becoming ashamed of how unsupportive and unfair administration has become.

I am Linda Welsch Bornemann, a 1979 MPHS graduate. I also feel that "punishing" the all for the acts of others is not the answer. This has been a long time tradition. I am a "veteran" Miller Placer, born and raised in Miller Place and stayed thru the age of 24 years old. Let the MPHS seniors have their Pep Rally back!

I am a Class of 1981 graduate. We were considered a "rough" group back in the day, so I sympathize with the decision making process. But, please don't let the actions of a small group spoil the memories of this graduating class! I ask that you reconsider your decision to let these kids participate in the tradition of a Pep Rally that has gone on for over 40 years. Go Panthers!!
