In the 25 years since I first heard my nephews wish for a place to do more than kickflips, I continue to be suprised that this city has not heard their cries for change. I have spent may hours driving to surrounding communities to support my own sons in developing their balance, patience, core strenght and comradery through skateboarding. As a mother, it was difficult to remind my children that the non-violent sport of skating was a violation against their home city's ordanences when carried out on the very surfaces that would ensure they would not be injured. When you say "no", you should offer an alternative. When I asked prominent city officials what alternative site could be used, I was told repeatedly that this city would NEVER support a safe environment specifically designed for bmx/boarding. Instead I was told to cross the bridge into West Springfield or have my children learn basketball! My boys don't need to be on a bench, fighting over a ball, or listening to rouge parents scream. I realize Springfield is the home of basketball but Holyoke is the home of volleyball and THEY have a small patch of cement to assure that all sports are addressed without having to pay a fee. We should know our family's $3,200 a year property tax can be sustaining a more positive area for our physical wellness than the littered soccer fields, netless tennis courts and glass-ridden basketball courts of this city. You see...skateparks HAVE TO STAY CLEAN to be safe and the users assure that remains true. Pour the cement in two places. Make it happen and the memorial garden behind the Forest Park Zoo will become a safe haven for new memories for our children, young and old. This will generate revenue by the skaters entering in vehicles, drinking sports drinks from the existing snack bar, and open up a healthy activity for our inner-city youth who have no backyard and can't afford to be affiliated with "organized" sports. Liability is waived by signage. Costs can be offset by area bu

Springfield desperately needs a place for the bmx and skate community. please please spread the word and sign the petition, with all that money coming in we can finally have a little slice of springfield thats all ours, so we may stop getting kicked out of every place we skate. With the loss of Junction after 15 years, we need somewhere we can go to feel home, to be in our element, to feel like we belong instead of always feeling like we shouldn't be skating here or Skateboarding is illegal there. Please, there's not too many places we can skate without people thinking we're bad kids with nothing better to do but we are good kids with a healthy habit and just have no place to congregate.
