Dear Mayor Sanders:

On June 26th this year at 5:45 a.m., our dear friend Ken Sawyer was killed in a motor scooter accident on Moreno Blvd – as was his habit, he was on his way to meet friends for an early morning run along Mission Bay. Ken was 51 years old. To know him was something that we will never forget. Whether professionally or recreationally Ken always drove us to do our very best however annoying he was to us in achieving that end. Everything that he did can be summed up as – hard work, spontaneity and integrity.

Ken’s playground was Mission Bay. His house overlooks Mission Bay and his business is at Morena Blvd. and Clairemont Drive. For most of his adult life, he worked out, ran, played tennis, and for fourteen years conducted his beloved Boot Camp – always on Mission Bay. To memorialize Ken and pay tribute to his devotion to this iconic San Diego playground, we collectively wish to fund a tribute to Ken that will inspire people at the Bay (locals or visitors) to go a step further, do something better for the community, to stay in good physical shape and always drive to do more. This is how Ken lived his life.

So far our attempts to bring some type of memorial to fruition have proved to be frustrated by a bureaucratic inertia based upon the premise that there is no funding to administer this or any of the other tributes that other people wish to install and fund within the City parks system. We fully understand that anything proposed will require approval by the City – however we are fully prepared to fund and insure a tribute to our friend on Mission Bay. To be specific, we have a vision of a rock with a plaque leading to a small number of work out stations. Each station would be simple and have another plaque describing what to do with words along the lines that Ken often used. These could be at new locations or utilize the locations where existing work out station are now unusable. Each of us signing this on line petition are asking you directly to intercede so that we can find a rapid way to put in place not only a remembrance of our friend, but something that will be a benefit to one of the primary recreation areas in San Diego.

Sincerely,
