Groot-Brittanie of Zwitserland.

It is time to support fundamental researches.

Did anyone ever calculate how much manpower and money is lost by writing and evaluating projects that are never granted?

Perhaps researchers should take a drastic step to warn society and government. If the statistics of success drops below a certain percentage (to be agreed upon), make the attribution of funds a lottery. At least researchers will gain back the time that is now lost in writing outstanding projects that will not be funded.

Any compromise on basic research support will adversely affect the society within less than a decade. Surplus funding should be made available at any cost.

I fully support the petition! It is indeed very frustrating to have to spend months a year in writing proposals, while the success rate is only 15%: This is really an immense waste of time for thousands of highly qualified people (professors, post-docs and PhD-students), time which could be investigated far better in the research itself! This situation really works paralyzing and is contraproductive and dramatic for the research ranking of Flanders!
