laag slaagpercentage werkt enorm demotiverend.

Fundamental research is of crucial importance for any modern society and education system. As such, increased investment will yield long-term benefits. On the other hand, extensive cuts in the financing system of research institutions - often motivated by current political or economic reasons - will in the long run do serious damage in sustaining the Flemish knowledge society.

I'm currently working on my PhD project, funded by FWO. I think more people should get the opportunity to enrich their personal and academic profiles in similar projects.

Follow the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities and how they could welcome the 2016 research Budget in Canada; an example that guarantees transformative, discovery-based research.

I fully agree with this article. There is definitely need for more funding for fundamental research!

We need financial support from the government for applied research.

Zonde

I fully support this petition. The poor success rate of grant applications has as consequence that much of the proposed research can often never be performed in Flanders. As a consequence often research output similar to originally rejected FWO proposals is eventually performed and valorized abroad. In general the fear is that the structural absence of funding undermines the scientific competitiveness of Flemish research towards the future. This is not only a call for more funding, but also to rethink how the success rate can also be increased, also with the available funding, by further rationalization of the means and by only providing what is strictly necessary to perform the research. Doctoral bursaries in Flanders appear to be, for example, also higher than in most advanced economies, for which there is no clear justification.

As a young PI just starting up his lab it is very discouraging to see the very low success rates for grant applications.

Fundamental research is incredibly important as it has brought our society where it is today. The applications may not be clear today, but neither was Einstein's theory of relativity when he proposed it. Funds should remain at a healthy level.
