I believe delivering long-term to life-time scientific positions, to researchers should become a core task of FWO. Funding this kind of independent researchers will boost novel industrial developments and create global employment.

We can only improve ourself and society through fundamental search and research. Keep funding a better world.

Without basic research today we would be NOWHERE....

I am quite disappointed that a wealthy and advanced region such as Flanders does not recognize the importance of being on top of the game when it comes to science and the accumulation of knowledge in a world that needs solutions to so many urgent problems. Why would Flanders want to play in the second or third league only? It is my conviction that a significant increase of support for the FWO will put Flanders on the map among the big players in which these solutions are produced.

Although having been successful to some degree at FWO, the rate of unsuccessful submission is high because of competition and probably prioritisation for the more popular topics in cancer, internal medicine,.. . The smaller specialties diserve recognition as well

Basic research is the foundation of innovation and scientific progress. To support only translational and deny appropriate funding for fundamental research is to go against scientific history, where without fundamental findings many translational applications would have gone undiscovered. It's time to stand up for basic research, research with non-murine model organisms and aspiring young scientists who wish to address questions, not pursue products.

The evaluation of the proposals as well as the appealing process should also be reviewed: it should be more objective and it should be obligatory for the panel to take into the opinions of the expert reviewers.

There is a severe limit of funding support for postdoctoral researchers. Compounded by the immigration regulation, it is very difficult for young researchers outside EU to grow and establish a research career in Flanders.
