It is a hugh waste of time and tax payers money to write excellent research grants and to evaluate them if they cannot be funded anyway due to the lack of money. This time is lost for research and teaching. I find it also very embarrassing that colleagues from abroad are asked by FWO to spend their precious time to evaluate these useless project applications.
The most embarrassing and frustrating situation I ever had was a project application I coordinated with partners from different countries from Europe and Africa in the framework of an EU ERANet programme. The project was selected for funding, but due to lack of financial resources at FWO it was not funded, while all other partner countries were able fund the project. This severe financial situation at FWO hampers international cooperation.
Due to the lack of funding it also became almost impossible to participate in scientific conferences and workshops abroad (unless you are invited). The choice is either to finance the research of MSc and PhD students or to go to a conference abroad. In that case you rather stay at home.
I also would like to ask students to sign this petition, because the lack of research money in Flanders threatens their education at university as well as their professional future. Since only 13 % of the project applications are funded, there is no sufficient money for research at Flemish universities, which means that there is also no sufficient budget for bachelor, master and PhD theses. At some point students will no longer be able to use state-of-the-art methods for their thesis research (not to talk about cutting-edge methods), it will only be possible to use cheap and sometimes out-dated methods. Universities cannot sufficiently support the research of their students and scientists. The same is true for many lab practicals, because universities do not provide a sufficient budget for teaching. Research and to a some extend teaching (lab practicals) depend on third party research fun

That scientists have to sign petitions to convince the government of the value of their research is unacceptable. There is always money for political purposes or to run wars..Basic research has brought human society to where they are now, it should be granted the same fundamental funding privileges as the political class or army of the country!

There would not be DNA structure without basic research. Can you imagine that? We need to raise support to basic research and not only to translational research. We need to discover new biological mechanisms to work on.

Here the fundamental research can be even better with more financial support. Why not?!
