Nice initiative and absolutely essential that there should be a more acceptable success rate for fundamental research projects by increasing the amount of funding.

It is important that well established research proposals should have the opportunity to be funded. Academic researchers need this kind of financial support in order to buy the required products and instruments, to hire new PhD students, to present their research at international symposia and to finally achieve the proposed goals. Only this way, we are able to get recognition at the level of international top research.

as long as the only parameter that counts will continue to be number of IF-journal articles per what/whoever, FWO will continue to prove its inability to go for a strong, future-oriented vision...
sigh...

Scientific strength in Flanders lies in the wide diversity of scientific expertise that is present. Multidisciplinary teams can perform groundbreaking and translational research and shorten the road towards valorization.

No brainer...

I fully support this petition. In my researchgroup, 65% of my phd students are currently funded by individual countries outside the EU. Such a construction enables me to cope with the decreasing success rates for funding in Flanders/Belgium, but the drawback is that these phd-students will import their newly acquired 'Flemish' expertise in their home countries within a few years. So I am working on the increase of the expertise level in my research domain outside rather than inside Flanders....
