I can fully support the Flemish colleagues, as we also have to cope with the same problem (even worse?) at the Walloon side with FNRS.

An increase in the percentage of success would be desirable

In some commissions the success rate is far below the 20% stated in the petition text, even ranging between 10-15%. One small remark can kill your application although sometimes the external referee comments were excellent.

Strongly support investment on fundamental research as a basis of an educated country and a strong economy

Research on theoretical, fundamental subjects provides the foundation of science, and determines the further development of society.

Fundamental research is too important for it to be seen as a budget post in which we can cut or stagnate.

Keep research alive in Belgium

There is a lot of pressure on budgets in these times of stagnating economic growth. Still, this is the best time for long term investments: investing in science pays off!

As a young researcher I am already aware of the difficulties to get funding for applied sciences. I realise that this is even more difficult for basic sciences.

The quality of life science and medical research has dramatically increased in Flanders the past two decades, as a result the number of highly competitive proposals increases every year while funding does not or even decreases, we have crossed the level where people start to wonder whether it actually is worth the effort to invest time in FWO projects given the extremely low succes rates, also for the commission members this is very demotivating, reading so many good application while only being able to support a few, also for young emerging teams the situation is truely dramatic, they cannot compete with the established big teams, if Flanders wants to invest in research it should do it now before talented people again move elsewhere
