Mayor Elorza, We Need More Library Hours​​: Boost Funding for Providence Community Library

The library is very important to me as a place for accurate information and as a source for diverse recreational materials. As a retired person, I normally visit the library in the morning. This means I often need to go to the library in an adjoining city instead of walking 10 minutes to the PCL location in my neighborhood.

I love the library! It’s like a shopping mall for your mind!

We are so fortunate to have these amazing libraries and committed staff/colleagues in Providence - Just imagine being able to have ACCESS to full library services, like other cities and towns in RI! With Providence being an amazing place to live and work, PCL is dedicated to the provision of innovative learning experiences and diverse cultural environments to all residents. Funding “normal” open hours/services for residents would enable more sustainable, measurable outcomes in our communities and foster a greater sense of pride and culture in the capital city of RI. Can we afford not to invest in public libraries when the stakes are so high and the return is so great?

I would think rigorous funding for this would be essential if the city is serious about turning the schools "around."

I am signing this petition to vouch my support for extended hours and more literacy programs at Providence Public Libraries. Not only are these libraries safe refuges for patrons, but they provide our students with additional avenues to literacy. I was just another Providence kid myself and these institutions saved me. Not only providing me with a safe, warm and welcoming place, but allowed me to believe that any literary pursuit was not impossible. It astounds me that we even have to think twice about providing our libraries with the vital resources our children and families need.

It is vital to keep our libraries open to the public after working hours. Libraries are the life blood of our democracy. A vibrant democracy needs an educated and informed public. Please help our to continue to provide the service needed. Sincerely Paul Stein

Libraries that are open for longer hours will have a direct impact on improving education in Providence

We pay enough in property tax and fines to make this happen

I love my library, but it is very hard to get there during open hours. We need more nights and evening hours! PCL already does so much for the young people of our city. That would grow tremendously if branches were open on the weekends, too!

More library hours mean more people served, greater access to free computers, and more programs for Providence's citizens.

People who work have a hard time getting to libraries when they are open.

Save libraries!

I am consistently using the Rochambeau branch of the PCL, both to get books to read, and to attend events at the library. I'm also know children and their parents who regularly use the library (infants to toddlers, as well as middle school kids), both for all the resources, and to have a safe place to be. We need more hours for our community, little kids to elders!

Libraries are essential!!! Please fund the libraries!
