Matt Read for the Calder Trophy!
This petition is to have the NHL reconsider their position upon Matt Read in the discussion over the Calder Trophy Finalists. Matt Read of the Philadelphia Flyers has been a pleasant surprise this season. The 25 year old rookie played well beyond his years. He finished the Regular Season, the judging period for the award with 24 Goals and 23 Assists, for a total of 47 Points. He was a disciplined player, logging only 12 Penalty Minutes over 79 Regular Season games. Although he only averaged about 12:03 per game in ice time, at least 2:35 of that was spent Short-Handed, and 2:25 was spent on the Power-Play. Matt Read averaged the 2nd most shifts per game of any rookie with 28.9 shifts. He was trusted on the ice in key situations by Coach Peter Laviolette during close games, no matter if the Flyers held a lead or were at a deficit, due to his willingness to take his game to a higher level when several Philadelphia Flyers players struggled or were lost to injury. I ask not only the Flyers Faithful to sign this petition, but any fan of Hockey around the world. Statistics and footage cannot deny that Matt Read, despite his more advanced age than the existing candidates, played to the same degree, if not a higher degree throughout the course of the season as an effective offensive and defensive player. Thank you
