Mathematics is not redundant

Pure mathematics is connected to the applied world in so many ways such that there is no clear boundary between the research of pure mathematicians and the development of machine learning methods that make such a big splash in the public awareness . Quite a number of people do both.

Mathematics is the language of science, if you stop teaching it, you also have to stop teaching English.

Clearly pure math is indispensable for the areas they claim to "ensure a research identity" in. How is "shaping for excellence" reconcilable with cancelling pure math?

Proper bad job this. Pure maths does not live in its own bubble - applied maths and the sciences thrive on its development. Imagine AI without linear algebra! Imagine physics without analysis! Think of all the work going into applying knot theory to DNA! This is the work of university administrators who don't understand the consequences of their actions.

As a mathematics student, I would be absolutely devastated if my university did this.

As a serious research university, trying to do science without doing basic maths, is nonsense. I do not even want to elaborate on this shame.

I cannot see how the university can pretend investing in areas such as AI while chopping off its Pure Mathematics arm. Completely absurd.

Pure mathematics is a fundamental part of science. Cease research in this area is a terrible decision Please reconsider!

About 60% of my CS doctoral dissertation was math. Pure math is the air computer scientists breathe; a CS academic community would suffocate without it.

Leicester has a first rate UK mathemematics department; destroying it would have widespread and devestating effects on the university's status, teaching mission, and ability to procure research funds across all related disciplines, many of them practical - engineering, computer science, physics and other sciences.

Modern applications of mathematics, particularly in data science and AI, depends on developments in ‘pure’ mathematics.

Pure math is essential in all scientific research, including AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science. Please reconsider.

Simply unacceptable.

Universities are supposed to be the defenders of pure science, without the constraints of what is of immediate economic benefit.

A university without theoretical research will quickly die, and theoretical research without mathematics is simply impossible. Far from making research in AI and computational possible, doing away with math research will make Leicester a less attractive intellectual environment, and limit the knowledge available to any researcher who does come to Leicester.

Please keep pure mathematics

To cut positions and research in maths seems extremely short-sighted, given the increasing relevancy of pure mathematics in a variety of applied and industrial domains

Pure mathematics underpins all elements of applied math. A department wishing to extend it's horizons into AI for example needs a crucial understanding of linear algebra. Personally, as soon as I heard that the University of Leicester was removing it's pure mathematics staff I immediately lost respect for the department.
