I hold a degree and PhD in pure mathematics, which is one reason I got my job applying AI in drug discovery. Pure maths is not redundant, it’s the fundamental basis of machine learning and current AI approaches from deep neural networks to knowledge graphs.

La recherche en mathématiques fondamentales est essentielle à nos existences, et je parle ici au niveau sociétal. Nous nous devons de protéger la culture et la recherche mathématique, en reprenant les mots de Jacobi, « pour l'honneur de l'esprit humain »!

This makes no sense since pure mathematics is required in computer science and related areas.

This part of the "shaping for excellence" plan would be a sure way to signal to excellent researchers (and students, and staff) of all fields that they should avoid Leicester University - damaging the University in many more ways than just the obvious damage to the Math department.

Cutting funds in fundamental research always comes back biting at us, in addition to creating right now very concrete personal problems to people who have been promised a long term job and life perspective. Don't do this mistake.

Alan Turing was a pure mathematician. This is a short-sighted and foolish move that will irreparably damage the University of Leicester’s standing.

Ceasing research in pure mathematics is antithetical to "shaping for excellence". The stated goals of "ensur[ing] a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" amount to nothing more than following the latest fads. University administrators should make it their job to explain to the public, the government, and funding agencies, the importance of basic research. Anyone unwilling or unable to do that has no business being a university administrator.

This is very short-sighted. The areas they claim they want to develop interact quite a lot with pure math. Please reconsider!

Pure mathematics is unavoidable, if you want to run a true university. It is the basis of all sciences, it is the source of new ideas and new approaches to real-life problems. For goodness' sake, has the VC ever heard of Hardy's "A mathematician's apology"?

Mathematics and Mathematical logic has been successfully applied not only to mathematics and its foundations , but also to physics, to biology, to computer science, to psychology, to law and morals, to economics, to practical questions, and even to metaphysics. In general, its applications have proven extremely fruitful!

To the Executive Board of the University of Leiceter: This proposal is myopic and should never be adopted. To do so would not only damage pure mathematics, but also the applied areas on which it is based.
