Investment in AI, computational modelling, digitization and data science requires further investment in Pure Mathematics, not cessation of research.
The suggested plan is nonsensical, and would permanently damage the University of Leicester, its reputation and its degree programs.

Pure mathematics is an essential component of any healthy research mathematics department. The idea that one can create a create a centre of research excellence in AI/data science and computational modelling by completely gutting all pure mathematics research is just plain idiotic.

Pure Mathematics is an absolutely essential part of the academic ecosystem.
Directing academic resources towards industry and market oriented goals is clearly and directly antithetical to the purpose of academic research and discourse.

This is not only a short-sighted misunderstanding of AI, etc. It is a signal that the Leicester administration misunderstand a great deal. Good people in all disciplines will leave a university when they lose confidence in its future. Can you think of a more efficient way to erode confidence across the entire university than to signal to everyone that careers can be ruined at the whim of stupid people?

This is an incredibly short sighted plan and demonstrates the lack of understanding of the importance of pure mathematics in other disciplines.

I'm a fellow (somewhat pure) mathematics student from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia. Pure mathematics research is necessary and extremely crucial to developments in other areas, notably physics and applied mathematics. You can't have developments in "computation modelling" and "data science" without pure mathematics. Imagine if pure mathematicians did not develop number theory or probability theory, cryptography and statistics (thus data science) wouldn't be as developed as now. It's appalling that the University of Leicester wants to destroy pure mathematics research.
PURE MATH IS COOL
