You could also remove the foundations of your house since you don't live down there, or fire all the farmers as your food comes from the supermarket.

As a mathematics graduate I find it deeply troubling that this department, among others, would be considered for termination. Aside from disadvantaging the research community by denying academic talent the resources they need to collaborate and achieve breakthroughs, and the knock-on effects in related (and seemingly unrelated) fields, this action is a deep disservice and betrayal to the *people* who have undoubtedly committed their time and passions to bettering the university and society as a whole. Let us not forget that pure mathematicians lay the foundations underpinning our encryption, national intelligence/defence capabilities, physics, engineering, econometrics and the algorithms that propel the very field that you are looking to replace this department with.
If you want money to fund AI research, go out and get it - there are plenty of interested parties and capital knocking around without you needing to lay off hardworking academics in the middle of a global crisis and economic downturn.
Do better. Be better. Don’t betray your own.

What in the name of Euler are they playing at? This is an absolute disgrace and an affront not just to mathematics, but to wider academic progress.
Short sighted profit mongering at the expense of academic value is unlikely to turn out well for the future of a higher education institution.

Mathematics is an intrinsic component of science ever since ancient times.
An institute without pure mathematicians cannot be called a research university.
Pure Mathematics is very important
