Removing pure maths is no path to excellence

The MATHS are a whole. You cannot have applications without theory.

This is the dumbest move as a university. Everyone knows pure math is a noble and honorable field. Without pure math what algorithms would we have? Machine learning is based off of geometry. Graph theory is used in coding for social media and the internet.

Research in pure mathematics is of fundamental importance, and its utility extends to related areas - applied mathematics, statistics, data science, physics, economics and computer science, to name a few.

This is true madness. Short-term strategy based on what may seem fashionable today. Demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the actual underpinnings for the areas they claim to want to develop. An obvious and inevitable fail.

This is unacceptable for scientific, academic and humanitarian reasons!

It is so easy to make harm and so hard to restore values...

I suggest most top administrative jobs to be made redundant at the University of Leicester. They are obviously an obstacle towards excellence.

A university with no Pure Mathematics is a laughing stock.

This is outrageous and unacceptable. If the University of Leicester wishes to strive for a research identity in these fields of computer science, then research pure mathematics is essential! Research in mathematics has been and continues to be the force behind all of science. If the University of Leicester removes all pure mathematics research, they will fall behind and loose all respect of the global scientific community. It would be a terrible move to fire all pure mathematicians and then hire them only for teaching purposes. Universities are not only machines to grind out undergraduate diplomas. They are all suppose to be hubs for research. This is would be an absolute terrible and devastating move by the University VC.

Stopping research in pure mathematics is extremely short sighted.

A mathematics department can not exist with a strong theoretical sector!

To the uni administration: Next time you advertise your math undergrad course be honest and tell your future students you do not have a pure-math research group (unlike the top ranking unis)

Abolishing pure math is pure nonsense.

Investments in "applications" at cost of fundamental research never yield effects. It is just wasting of money.

Pure mathematics research is absolutely central to human progress.

Can’t imagine something like this would happen.

Universities should have research and pursuit of excellence as a top priority. This is an academic principle that has been tested throughout history and Geographic location. Weak researchers become uninspiring teachers, and so handicap the other top purpose of a University.
