This idea is brain-dead stupid. No serious research university axes their mathematics research program. Doing this would immediately assign your university to the "3rd tier" or "4th tier" or lower of universities. There is nothing excellent about this plan.

Applied Mathematics cannot be developed in an academic environment that considers research in Pure Mathematics to be useless. This decision will not help the "shaping for excellence" but rather the "destruction of mathematical excellence".

I urge the University of Leicester to reconsider this short-sighted and narrow-minded decision, which will severely damage its reputation.

No computational modelling is possible without (mathematical) abstraction. Nowadays, reducing research in Pure Mathematics is short-sighted but ceasing it is simply absurd.

Especially given the focus on "AI, computational modelling and data science", research in pure mathematics brings something to the table Computer Scientist and engineers cannot achieve. These fields have emerged from the hands of pure mathematicians. Progress in AI will therefore not be achieved without the collaboration of pure mathematics. If anything, create an incentive for pure mathematicians to do research in data modelling.

Aiming to developp e.g. AI or whatever applied digital science without mathematics (pure or applied) is completely stupid.

As someone be working in AI & ML research, I use techniques derived from my pure mathematics background daily to analyse and develop the internals of models. Removing the opportunity to study this field when I was at university would have diminished my ability to creatively draw on novel techniques and overall reduce the ability for me to apply my academic potential to research problems and I do not support this action to close this field at the university of Leicester.

As an applied mathematician with activity in AI it is my deep conviction that pure maths is an essential pillar on which I stand. My gratitude to all pure mathematicians who make/made this possible.

Before signing this petition, I inquired a bit into Vice Chancellor Nishan Canagarajah's profile. I find it unbelievable how a scientist of his stature may turn out to be so provincial and short-sighted. I'm sure plenty of signatories already said it, but I'll say it again: if, about two hundred years ago, someone had successfully convinced people that fundamental mathematics research of the time (say, Fourier analysis) should be abandoned in order to solely pursue whatever technological developments were trending back then (say, improve the textile industry), literally NONE of Prof. Canagarajah's research would exist today. Surely he and his staff know this. Surely they are intelligent people. And yet, they somehow manage to make the dumbest choice! (PS: I do research in computer science, not fundamental mathematics, I'm not trying to defend my own chapel here).

Pure and applied mathematics go hand in hand. Data science and AI needs mathematics more than ever before to develop new methods with strong foundations provided only by mathematics.

Leicester University has a distinguished tradition in Mathematical Logic, dating back to Professir R.L.Goodstein, and distinguished research students such as my late colleague Professor Barry Cooper. Only someone who doesn't the relationship between computer science and its mathematical underpinnings would think kit sensible to kill pure mathematics to spend more or applied science.

This is an insane step that defies logic and the repetitional damage that it will to to the University of Leicester will be felt for decades to come.
