The 2012 Deloitte report for UK is still relevant : https://epsrc.ukri.org/newsevents/pubs/deloitte-measuring-the-economic-benefits-of-mathematical-science-research-in-the-uk/
The building and transmission of knowledge, innovation and research is a long history. Cutting positions and imposing drastic changes with short views on science, and here on mathematics and their « utility », may damage society and its future.

Pure Maths underpins most of Statistics. Cutting Pure makes the department a less attractive place to be a researcher in Statistics, in my opinion.

This naive step will destroy an internationally highly-respected pure mathematics group and damage the reputation of science as a whole in Leicester -- there is no clear pure/applied split.

Pure mathematics is the foundation core from which the applications you seek spring. And research-based teaching is much better than the alternative.

Pure maths is the basis for a lot of vital research, I feel for your students that spend 3 years studying it to then not be able to go further with it.

Please, do not fire the great and efficient academic staff in Pure mathematics.
The plan to drop pure maths will cause long term damage to the quality and reputation of the department
