Mathematics is not redundant

I am the director of the eldest institute fully devoted to applied mathematics in the world and we are fully committed to develop computational modeling , data science etc. But I have to say that cutting out Pure Mathematics is just a bad and stupid mistake. There is no difference between Pure and Applied Mathematics, all the research in math is connected and important. There are a lot of examples of pure research with extraordinary impact on applications (people in data science now use persistent homology, to say), and applications are essential to inspire new mathematical research. Please, stop this plan.

I’m a student at the uni (in a completely different, non-STEM school) but even I can see that this decision is short-sighted, and borne out of an ignorance of the importance of pure mathematics.

Stopping research in pure mathematics will result down the line in stopping research in science altogether. Especially the mathematics done in Leicester.

This is a very short-sighted move which damages the reputation of the University of Leicester. It is still well-known in the UK for its research in pure mathematics.

PhD pure mathematics 1998, Warwick university. No longer in academia.

As one who moved from pure mathematics to industry in “AI ... data science” this seems very off. These areas are founded on and continue to use some of the purest of pure mathematics. Their growth is no reason for cutting it any more than earlier growth in physics, engineering or biological sciences.

This is academic vandalism

You can't teach data science without giving students a strong background in Algebra, Analysis and Discrete Mathematics. To teach well those fields you need proper researchers not just lecturers who hardly know anything beyond the scope of their curriculum.

It is absurd to attempt to ensure a future research identity in AI by ceasing research in Pure Mathematics. I work in industrial research in AI. My PhD and postdoc in pure mathematics were an essential component in developing the hard skills and intellectual capacity to grapple with this field of endeavour.

A university is founded on the strength of the community. Gutting the community will leave Leicester with empty buildings and accountants wondering why their REF-based top up beans are so meagre.

An extremely short-sighted proposal that shows complete lack of understanding of the way Maths departments work. If implemented, this would damage the reputation of the University of Leicester with prospective students and prospective employees, including those researchers in the areas currently popular with funders that the VC wants to attract.
