How can you have a university without pure mathematics?

A decision made without any scientific basis. On the contrary, there is a need to do much more mathematics to understand the serious limitations of empiricism of Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence as done by computer scientists. WE NEED SCIENCE

So many of our Open University maths and stats students with a particular interest in areas like data analysis over the past 50 years have been struck, after bring initially surprised, by the relevance of the ideas and ways of thinking in pure mathematics to the ways of handling complex information. OU students are adults bringing their own experiences of the outside world to their studies, so represent a wider world view of what degree studies can offer. For a university with ambitions to be at the cutting edge of research, to drop research into pure mathematics is a huge step backwards

This seems like an incredibly short-sighted decision. Having seen the excellence in pure maths from Leicester up close, I can't understand why anyone would think that getting rid of it will help research into AI and other data-driven fields. The foundations that these fields rely on are often entirely within the remit of pure mathematics.

Fundamental research into pure mathematics is critical to the success of technical endeavours that lie beyond the scope of the field itself. Removing such a group in the name of a shift towards "practical" applications is short-sighted and actively counterproductive to such a goal. In the interests of both academia and the institutional objectives of the University of Leicester, I would urge a reconsideration of this decision.

What a tragic lack of understanding over what academia is about.

Maybe it can be beneficial to both students, as they get potentially better teaching, and researchers, they can focus on their studies, it's not the proper time to do this in the middle of a pandemic.

What a shame that Leicester University ignore that improving math is a way of improving of our abstract thinking about Physics, Biology, AI, Sociology, etc.
It's about improving our abstract thinking about everything!

Try replacing those VC by an AI. No AI would state a nonsense like "research identity in AI... requires ceasing research in Pure Mathematics".

This is an act of vandalism. From cryptography to algorithms to mathematical logic Pure maths (so crucial as a human activity in itself) has repeatedly become the basis of future technologies.

This will just dramatically lower the status of U of Leicester, with no gain. Who is going to choose to study any mathematical area at Leicester after this?
Nonsense
