I do work in computational modeling, and data science for a fortune 500 company. I got my degree in pure maths, and I'm better for it. You should be ashamed.

I am a quantum chemist and my field of research continuously benefits from the work of both applied and pure mathematicians. If we want to reach excellence in science, we need maths, and all aspects of it.

It is foolish to assume that excellence can be shaped without a solid theoretical basis, or to assume that future research can be based upon the theoretical basis of the past.

My very first job was as a lecturer in pure mathematics at Leicester University. The head of department at that time was the distinguished mathematical logician R L Goodstein. So if this proposal goes ahead it will be a very sad day for me personally as well as for pure mathematics in the UK.

What a strange plan — what's next? defund the humanities? cease the study of classics?

Absolutely disgusting. All maths lies on the hard work and research of pure mathematicians (even if I will never understand it)

Discontinuing research in pure mathematics is unacceptable, and will completely undermine the discipline of mathematics within the university.

A terrible idea that will damage the standing of Leicester University, not to mention the hardship it brings to the affected colleagues.

Pure mathematics is at the heart of all of mathematics research and its impact is often felt only many years later. Please reverse this short sighted decision.

I’m in computer science, which means my entire discipline grew out of what a century ago was a particularly useless branch of pure maths. This is short-sighted garbage and its architects should be ashamed of themselves.

This harms the reputation of Uni of Leicester in not just maths but all fields as it shows brazenly that the university has no interest in pursuing knowledge and is instead driven by profit.

Allowing market-driven ideology to turn academics into casual employees will diminish the standing of UK universities, devaluing decades of investment.

Oppose the layoff of my colleagues in UK.
