This is an extremely short-sighted measure.

One cannot have a serious math department without pure math. That's insane!

As a statistician I can only agree and support this petition. We are all sono and daughters of Pure Mathematics

This would be a terrible mistake for your deparment and students. We should be aiming to produce well rounded mathematicians to face modern challenges and this decision would fly in teh face of this need. Protect the fundamentals

An applied mathematician myself, I would not recommend to my students a maths department with no pure mathematics research

Absurd decision. Pure mathematics is our art.

Pure math is the foundation for most mathematical sciences. Please stop this outrageous decision. It will only reduce Leicester University’s credibility in the research community.

Cutting funding to pure mathematics will diminish the position of Leicester as a leading university.

You cannot do Applied Mathematics without Pure one. Many Pure Mathematics results are essential for the fields claimed to be supported by the University of Leicester. I have never liked the categorisation of Mathematics into Pure and Applied. There are only two types of Mathematics: Good one and Bad one. It is very sad that Mathematics has become a prey of managers.

Mathematics gives us tools for understanding the universe.

This is utterly repugnant conduct. Replacing research-active staff with a smaller number of teaching-only staff is a blatant cost cutting exercise that changes the institution from a research-based university to a teaching-based technical school. I suggest that Leicester has its university status removed if that's what they want to be.

This is an absurd proposition. Pure maths is an extremely important part of a maths department's work and to ignore this is willful disregard.

Maths is an important pursuit. If you want to get rid of something, try marketing. The less adverts there are, the better the world would be.

All of mathematics and computer science, pure and applied, are based on pure mathematics.
