Closing down research in mathematics is incredibly short-sighted ... fields such as AI, computational modelling, data science, etc, need *more* people trained in abstract mathematics, not fewer, and not having research mathematicians will cripple the ability of the department to teach at the highest levels.

I thought the purpose of a university was to inspire and educate its students whilst exploring ideas that are important to society. Modern pure mathematics is incredibly powerful and continues to pave the way for the sciences.
I recommend that you reconsider this decision regarding mathematics research. It would harm the reputation of your university, and many applied mathematicians (myself included) will remember it.

I am a pure Mathematician (Columbia 2010) now Managing Director in a large US banks - because pure Maths research do help insight over applied problems.

Once somebody told me: "Saying Pure Mathematics is not important because of its lack of direct applications is like saying that the Sun is not useful because it is not edible"

Mathematical research is where you reach when a quantitative problem does not yield to solution attempts. To rationalise it away is to sign up to perpetual mediocrity.

A university without a pure mathematics department cannot rightly call itself a university. If the University of Leicester wishes to be taken seriously as a university it needs to support all the major disciplines, including mathematics.

It is simply a fact that applied researchers need a strong foundation in pure mathematics. While the idea of the University becoming more AI focused, giving itself a unique selling point, is *potentially* promising, the lack of details and planning makes this an irresponsible and risky decision. The true intentions of the VC have not been made 100% clear and have not been concretely backed up with a sufficient plan. Looking at the proposed cut to research purely from a business / profit / USP perspective, the proposal is too risky to be taken seriously. This is even without considering many of the other points mentioned by others in these comments.

Imagine how backward applied mathematics would be right now if it weren't for advances in geometry, topology, algebra, analysis - in fact, all of 'pure' mathematics.

Mathematics forms a major part of many disciplines.Plans to promote excellence need to include provision to strengthen mathematics. A mathematics department without pure mathematicians cannot be a strong department.
