If you think they are not up to scratch manage them. This is a terrible indictment on the university as an employer.

Replace professors by lecturers? Shhh. Downgrading a university to a glorified secondary school, that's what it is.

This action may have short term benefit in profit. Directly applicable research pays off more. But if you are after profit, then perhaps you should look into trade. An university is an institution whose reasons for existence are research and education. It is inescapable that your operations require funds. But to sacrifice your reason for existence for what is in the end only your means is ridiculous. Mathematics is at the core of all scientific pursuits. To discontinue your Mathematical research is a betrayal to your purpose and leaves you crippled to depending on others. There is no good argument for this.

Data science, AI, etc, absolutely depends on fundamental mathematical research. This is incredibly short-sighted.

AI and data science could not have been possible without research in pure mathematics. Thinking that their future evolution will be detached from future contributions in pure mathematics is simply nonsense.

The potential of theoretical mathematics is immeasurable compared to the, much needed ofc, applied. Although a shift in the demands, of the research done, maybe is needed. This publish or die trend is killing certain branches and now theorists are pushed out? The lack of vision is clear in such a choice. Change the demands. Focus on theoretical problems than unlock potential for the applied. Only applied will result in stagnation and banality in the papers produced. Hope they make the best choice.
