Sin matemáticas la IA se va estancar porque necesitamos el formalismo para crear nuevas herramientas. Las matemáticas no estan todas hechas.

The mathematics is so important for the development of the science and the technology

Pure Math can't be done away with.

For a well regarded mathematics department to cull their pure research staff seems foolish. This is especially true here -- the Leicester algebra group for example is one of the best in the country. Not only does this group strengthen the reputation of the university, its strong connections to other institutions benefit UK mathematics as a whole.

Students need to be taught and inspired by the best researchers, this is a university not a secondary school.

You cannot build a masterpiece without a foundation. Pure mathematics is that foundation.

You cant build a taller buildling by saving money on foundations. They're shaping for ignorance.

I strongly urge to rethink this very short sighted idea. Pure Mathematics is the backbone of many sciences and of Mathematics altogether. Destroying it at Leicester would make the whole university much less attractive to many prospective students and reduce its general standing significantly. It would throw away a lot know how and connections and excellent tradition.

Research in AI depends on mathematics. But more than that, cutting down basic research and focusing on the current hot trendy topics is a first step in a move away from a being a research university, and towards becoming a certification entity.

These are the times that teach us we should increase investment in fundamental research, not abolish it.

Getting rid of pure mathematics is fundamentally short-sighted. It is like getting rid of the train engine while keeping the carriages on the grounds that the passengers in the carriages are income generators while the engine represents a cost. But without the engine, those passengers will get nowhere.

Very short-sighted. You will lose both your credibility as a university and your students: those who want to do AI will study AI, and those who want to study maths will choose a different university with a proper mathematics institute.

This is absurd there is no pure or applied or data mathematics there is just good great or bad mathematics

Es ridículo pensar eliminar matemáticas puras por dedicarse a cuestiones computacionales, de donde creen que surgió todo lo que hay detrás del análisis de datos y demás

Without pure mathematics there is no applied mathematics. Data science is mostly linear algebra.

This is not the right way to increase research into the applied maths fields identified. Pure maths creates applied maths decades on and is vitally important to fields like computer science.

Stopping pure mathematics research is the polar opposite of 'shaping for excellence'

I strongly support the case of our colleagues. Pure mathematics are of the highest value.

Cutting pure mathematics for short-term gain is just stupid

Research in AI relies on pure maths research. Expand your departments, don’t make budget cuts which destroy valuable centers of research!
