A university's scientific faculty cannot succeed without pure mathematicians. Unless the University of Leicester wants to unnecessarily damage its reputation for the sciences, it must keep its Pure Mathematics department.

This is extremely short-sighted and retrograde.

To cut research in mathematics in order to fund research in AI is an incredibly poor reason - fundamental mathematical research led to the birth of the field of computer science, the study of algorithms, and complexity theory. Funding research in AI must mean funding research in pure mathematics.

Solidarity to the maths dept at Leicester and all other fundamental research depts around the globe.

I grew as a pure mathematician and evolved to be an expert in machine learning and AI. You need pure mathematics whatever you are doing, in science.

Without pure mathematics, there is nothing to derive applied mathematics from... The foundations of research and theory drive innovation by reaching out beyond what is known to be useful, into what will be discovered to be of use. It would be irresponsible to abandon this research, especially at a time when its fruits are being born out across the board: Every applied field from neurological research to protein folding for vaccine development to drone machine vision is dependent on tools which were developed by pure mathematics research long before applied fields discovered what they were useful for.

Mathematics is the most universal language of logic and research in mathematics has provided humanity with many important insights e.g. in physics, economics or engineering.

Pure research is how the recent #gme #fugazi #fintech social engineering happened. Let #STEM breathe free.

Leicester seems to have decided that it no longer wishes to be regarded as a real university. The proposed cessation of research in pure mathematics is the latest development following the reports on the changes to its English degree. All staff at Leicester need to stand up and be counted otherwise Leicester University will be lost. Think on this: if they can come for English and Mathematics they can come for any subject.

Pure mathematics is the foundation for any science. In particular, the foundation for any AI related research. I am that the changes in Leicester University’s mathematics staff could lead to dramatic changes in quality of its education.

Incredible that they even consider this. Erratic moves like this one will weaken the university, not make it stronger.

Utterly shortsighted proposal

Pure mathematics, like basic research is a foundational building block of applied mathematics and science. The one cannot progress without the other.

This is unacceptable! Applied disciplines are obviously attractive for the management because their results are immediately applicable (and with that comes profit) but in the long run it is the Pure Science that drives the fundamental advancements.

I hold a PhD in pure math (symplectic geometry) which ensured me problem solving and learning skills without which I'd be unable to change my job time and again in the IT sector
