Pure Math should not be separated from applied math, nor discarded. Both look for fundamental patterns, and use fundamentally similar ideas. Pure math let’s people discover connections between seemingly disparate concepts, and drives future innovation and ideas. The practical ideas of today, were once the theoretical ideas of yesterday. The breakthroughs of today are usually based on realizing that one idea is related to another...and that’s what pure math is all about.

Research progress in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science would not exist without Pure Mathematics, so this is a very short-sighted decision which undermines the UK's academic standing as well as that of Leicester. The government has just made an additional investment into funding for Mathematics as a discipline, acknowledging the importance of fundamental research in this area.

I do not understand how it can be thought that Pure Mathematics is not a necessity. Pure Mathematics is the fundamental basis from which all Mathematical applications derive.

Pure maths is very important. It's an exploration of beauty and the law of the nature. It's also the foundation of the future of science. The use of differential geometry in general relativity and number theory in cryptography are vivid examples.

This is a very disappointing and flimsily argued proposal that, if persisted with, seems likely to inflict serious reputational damage on the university, affecting its future ability to recruit staff and students. The university seems not to have learnt its lesson from being obliged to withdraw similar threats of redundancy in 2016, which had been justified on spurious financial grounds. It is to be hoped that wiser heads will soon recognize the need to proceed differently.

Blunt and short-sighted move. Going forward with it during the current pandemic shows they know they are doing something wrong and want to get away with it that way.
