I can hardly believe it. Any top administrative staff who even consider this is a permanent threat to the academic environment. The VC should resign immediately.

Cutting fundamental research at this time is hardly a solution.

A university hiring teaching only staff for mathematics, which is the most difficult and fundamental subject for computer science, physics and engineering, is doomed. I used to have great respect for the University of Leicester.

Pure mathematics is the basic for any mathematical activity, including in physics, computer science and mathematical physics

Nishan Canagarajah you are a serious scientist - you know better than this!

this regretable proposal by Leicester University shows a lack of understanding of the interconnectedness of various science disciplines.

I'm an Applied Mathematician and even I realize that Pure Mathematics underpins everything that I do. It is very short-sighted to undervalue current research in Pure Mathematics, since new research always leads to new applications

from an applied mathematician who works in AI and thinks that ceasing research in pure math "to ensure a future research identity in AI" is a cultural nonsense

As an applied scientist I undetstand you need something to apply.

How can you reach such decision at a time when the UK government is increasing its investment in all areas of Mathematical Sciences? This shows a lack of understanding for the discipline and the wider context. Appalling!

The long march through the institutions continues unabated. Sickening.

Getting rid of pure mathematicians demonstrates a lack of understanding in how much math there remains to be discovered and how potentially useful it may be.

It is so annoying that Universities are run by "effective" managers who have neither strategic vision nor understanding of research and even the essence higher education.

This action would be a short-sighted, colossal mistake. Cutting-edge breakthroughs in applied mathematics, computation, engineering, biomedical sciences, etc. are often the fruits of earlier advances in pure mathematics. Pure mathematics is an integral part of the intellectual infrastructure of any institution that presumes to call itself a university.

It does not make sense to construct a new vision for a university whilst removing one of its most key and solid foundations.
