Base research in pure mathematics has long term impact on applied research: using a short term metric to validate it is nearsighted

Theoretical mathematics is basic for human development, Leicester's pure math department is a important research center with reputed scientists working there. The University of Leicester would loose a lot if they go ahead with this. It's completely unwise.

The health of academia is measured by the breadth of its pure mathematical research.
Without pure mathematics we wouldn't have modern encryption, computers, AI, and more.
To stop pure mathematics is to stop science itself.

All STEM subjects are important. The interconnectedness of all the other departments to mathematics, both pure and applied cannot be understated

As someone who studied pure mathematics to PhD level and then went on to work in a machine learning related job, I found my background in pure mathematics, taught by experts in the field, to be hugely helpful. I don't think I would be in the same position now had I been taught a data science degree instead, as in my opinion it is a huge benefit to have a strong grounding in mathematics before studying data science.

Extremely shortsighted. All sciences live from the interaction of its parts, let it be experimental, theoretical, pure or applied.

I work with researchers in a number of domains, mathematics underpins practically all of them, including the information technology we use as tools in that research.

I oppose this decision in the strongest possible terms. I'm a mathematician who works at the interface of data science and pure mathematics. The notion that you can build an AI/Data Science department without strong pure mathematics research is absurd. So not only is this morally objectionable, but it's also a poor strategic decision.

This short-sighted political decision made by the VC aims at degrading of Fundamental Research in the UK and will push the UK down from its World leading position.

I am baffled by the notion "excellence" being used in the university VC proposal. Please reconsider.
