The accountancy profession relies on high quality graduates who excel in maths. For the actuarial profession it is absolutely vital. To destroy the pure maths faculty will destroy Leicester University as a credible university in the field of maths.

It is so sad to hear this utter nonsense.

This kind of institutional myopia will decimate your university. Today's pure mathematics research is tomorrow's leading edge tech.

Mathematics is the basis for all the fields considered as important by the VC. Shattering the basis seems the worst decision to be made.

Please reconsider, pure mathematics is the basis of innovation in science. What would happen if Academic Institutions were only interested in applied science.

This is a very dangerous road for the university to go down, if it wishes to continue to call itself a university. The move is absolutely apauling.

Mathematics is one of the most precious heritage of humankind. It is much more than its parts used in sciences and engineering. I believe that every human being should get his or her share from this treasure. We need mathematics departments because only those who understand and produce mathematics can teach mathematics appropriately. That's why we must support mathematical research and hence mathematicians.

Mathematics is not a gadget, it is the mother language of nature. Teaching mathematics must be done by experts who master it. Beloved colleagues of Leicester Mathematics department, you have all my support.

Pure Mathematics is fundamental also in applied fields e.g. AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science

Pure mathematics is an integral part of AI research. New machine learning methods are derived and proved using advanced pure mathematics constantly, and this is not a redundant part of the field. Even if your goal is to improve the AI program, firing the pure mathematics departnent is a completely backwards way to do it.

You can't have applied maths without pure maths! Where do you think coding theory came from?

No institution without a serious research department in pure mathematics can justly call itself an excellent university.

I protest against the step taken by University of Leicester to make all pure mathematicans redundant. Progress in any field of science requires proper understanding of mathematics. It's shocking to see that a University lucky to have the privilege of outstanding pure mathematicans, takes such a backward step in fostering education. I hope they reflect on their decision and stop the initiation of this act soon.

Setting God aside - isn’t pure maths at the root of everything? This is beyond belief.

Pure math underpins so much of the advanced technology in our society. It's truly essential.

A terrible decision. Where do they think the tools used in "AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" originally came from?

This is an unacceptable proposal. Pure mathematics are absolutely fundamental.
