So let me get this straight: the plan is to cut funding for pure mathematics research to invest in applications of pure mathematics research? There’s a huge amount of work left to be done in mathematical modeling for machine learning, this is like stopping research into propulsion after inventing the steam engine.

It is quite striking that during worldwide pandemic where the world relies on scientists, universities are cutting funding to science. Solving a funding problem in this way is going to lead to more loss of funds in the long run when such universities lower standards and quality to the point where they are redundant themselves.

The decision to shutdown research in pure maths is extremely ill-informed and stems from a lack of understanding of both pure and (!) applied mathematics.

Just look at the technical details in any project with those sparkling titles "AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" and you'll see a hive of mathematical words, tables, diagrams, formulas; or else a tedious application of somebody else's software. Only in pure mathematics do people learn the big picture of what it really means, whether it makes sense, and how it applies to surprisingly different contexts if at all. Without knowing the math, all practitioners can do is follow each other's habits and guesses.

Though I work in the areas of computational biology, bioinformatics, and machine learning, my bachelor's and PhD are both in pure mathematics. Mathematics, the Queen of sciences including AI, is the bedrock of modern research. Calling it redundant reveals a deep ignorance in how modern science is accomplished.

A short-sighted executive decision no doubt based on chasing large research grants. A university worthy of its name cannot dispense with Pure Mathematics which underpins so many areas. The treatment of staff is to be deplored at any time but especially so with the current pandemic.

A university that prioritizes only short-term research is not a university at all, but a vocational school.
