The university administration might have good reason to create a new department, to teach topics such as AI, computer modelling, etc... But it is unfair to use the "mathematics" label, with its good reputation for serious studies, if mathematics is no longer the main topic.

AI is powerful, but do not confuse “intelligence” with “algorithms” that produce (artificial) opinions. Mathematics has much to contribute to understand AI’s limits and how to make it even better!

Unbelievable shortsightedness. Pure Mathematics underlies all science research. It is the study of pure structure and its fundamental importance cannot be overstated.

Next time you advertise your undergrad math course be honest to your future students and let them know you do not do pure-math research, unlike top ranking unis.

Pure mathematics underpins the entirety of "AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science". To remove all researchers in pure mathematics will greatly decrease the prestige of the department as a whole.

Pure mathematics is essential for research in physics, applied mathematics, computational biology, and computer science. It is not clear how you expect your institution to remain respectable within these fields without strong mathematics.

Dear all,
We have to be strong and together in this times.
Fundamental research is crucial.
You never know when and how pure math will be in actual use.
