"Applied Mathematics" and "Pure Mathematics" are like two sides of one coin. This deep relationship is nicely examplified in the recent mathematical theory of compressed sensing and its powerful applications.

Literally all of the fields of "AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" are built on pure mathematics. This is extremely short sighted.

This is a very short sighted decision. Pure maths is an essential subject and underpins all of the sciences.

In 2002 my university tried to close Maths down but the decision was overturned by the academic Senate of the University. As I said then, 'Mathematics is a fundamental part of nature, and like the natural world it needs to be understood and respected, and not just exploited. For a University to lose Mathematics as a subject in its own right represents real intellectual impoverishment.

My suggestion is that Pure Mathematics can be very useful (and is in fact a true investment) for future research in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science.

This is the second time somebody has tried to pull this off. Shortsighted, blinkered, misguided, and cruel. Please don't to it.

Pure Mathematics is needed in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science!

This is incredibly short-sighted and will significantly lower, rather than raise, the university's prestige.

This is just one of many outrageous 'reforms' the Leicester VC has sprung upon us in recent months.

My thoughts are with all the staff affected by this short-sighted decision. It's an utter betrayal of all their hard work, especially during these times. The university's justification is a complete nonsense and at very least the staff deserve an honest explanation. It seems to me that the decision is counterproductive, even to the stated aims. Pure maths underpins every area they wish to "invest or extend activities". Leicester need to reconsider this decision, or reconsider calling itself a university.

This is an insult to the memory of Sir Michael Atiyah, after whom one of the Leicester Math Dept buildings is named.

Mathematics is, behind everthing else, the language of physics. Like a man on two legs, he can't walk forward with only one.
