How can a serious research university propose to stop research in fundamental mathematics?

Pure mathematics is an important avenue for innovation and far from redundant

This is an idiotic general approach is pushed by so called "business people" who have no sufficient education to predict what will happened with the society without advanced in fundamental research. Very dangerous tendency.

How a university could think that it might successfully grow new branches and leaves by chopping off the roots of its trees is truly beyond me.

Pure mathematics research is important, and without it there would be no "AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science." To fire a whole group of of people, especially during this pandemic requires an insane amount of greed, idiocy, and malice.

This is atrocious and shows how the university’s leaders don’t understand what research and by extension the reason for a university’s existence means.

If the University of Leicester wants to strengthen their "research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science", then they need also Pure Mathematics research.

Research in and research-led teaching of mathematics attracts the talent which then also enhances the quality of more applied areas like AI and data science. Even from a purely administrational viewpoint it must be obvious that positions in pure mathematics are among the most cost efficient of a university!

I have been observing the ongoing decline of the UK academic system. Attempting to dispose of the only intellectual safe guard for the quality control for students and staff in the sciences is surely the right way down the drain.

If Leicester wants to save money and its academic excellence, it must start by firing the morons behind this proposal. If there is anyone here who is not only redundant but a downright liability, it is the people who think pure math research can be dispensed with.

This is such a short-sighted and potentially dangerous decision. Millenia of collective experience have taught us the value of pure mathematics, and the need to keep pushing its boundaries.
