Short sighted and profoundly stupid decision.

If you really want to build a better program in AI, computational modeling, and such, this is the last thing you should do. Machine learning has fundamental unknowns and problems today that can only be solved by theoretical mathematicians. Journals are replete with work that tweaks some algorithm this way or that to achieve some showy ephemeral result, but the understanding of how and why is still missing from most of deep learning. Math is the key.

Clearly, the people that made this decision know nothing about these subjects. Pure Mathematics is the foundation to literally everything science. Pure Mathematics is concerned with making sure all the expressions and formulas we deal with make sense and are logically consistent, as well as figure out their limitations. How do you know it's safe to use a formula if you have no idea of its limitations? How do you know it's limitations without people actively researching it? This seems absolute absurd to me. Not only that - huge leaps (for the benefit of science) are made from the study of pure Mathematics. It takes an abstract outsider look sometimes to make breakthroughs, that other subjects just wouldnt be concerned with.

To remove mathematics to further AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science is like removing the wheels of a car to make it go faster.

I support fundamental research on math and physics in Leicester.

This is absurd, and discredits the school.

Study math is to study logic.

Pure math colleagues are essential to a functioning STEM research and education system.

This is an act of barbarism and should be stopped.

Imagine the history of science without Newton, Hardy, Littlewood, etc. The names of the people responsible for this decision must be made public, and they must be removed from any position that would allow them to further their goals.

This is disgraceful!

Destroying pure math anywhere, but particularly a strong department such as Leicester, is short-sighted and stupid.

This proposal is eloquent testimony to the unmitigated philistinism of the spivs who have usurped power in the UK, who have no concept of the depth of their own ignorance.

If Leichester U. is really so poor, it should first abolish all of the other arts that focus primarily on entertainment. Higher math has given us both atomic power and access to outer space. What has abstract art produced?

This step is against science, in general.

We have to be serious again about universities. You cannot cancel mathematics without seeing it can lead to very negative consequences.

The proposed action takes "short-sightedness" on the part of academic "management" to a new and dangerous level. Just where do these so-called "executives" think the new ideas and innovations that will revolutionize the study of AI, computational modeling, digitization, and data science will come from ? History clearly shows that Pure Mathematics is where. e.g. NO Relativity without Riemannian Geometry, NO AI or computational modeling without Boolean and Linear Algebra, NO digitalisation without Combinatorics, and NO Data Science without measure and probability theory. Frankly IMHO, these "executives" have just demonstrated that their positions are where disinvestment will generate the greatest rewards.
