The irony of claiming that you can cut research in pure mathematics as a path to making improvements in research in AI, computational modeling, etc. is shocking. Those are all areas that require and utilize pure mathematics research to make significant advances. Moreover, in terms of raising the profiles of an institution, cutting pure maths just damages your reputation, weakens your academic programs, and increases costs in basic research.

Cutting back pure mathematics at the cost of applied mathematics reveals a fundamental lack of comprehension for both.

This decision by the University administration is atrocious and comes from a business utilitarian perspective, which is neither in the interest of students nor society.

Cutting on pure mathematics is a short sighted strategy because it means cutting out the scientific base of all the strategic fields that are built upon pure mathematics.

This sounds like one of the most damaging decisions a university can make to its reputation. The excuse of having plans to invest in fashionable applied areas is not convincing: what academic would choose to work in an institution that closed pure mathematics?

Mathematics is the in core of every science, natural and social. Cutting down research in math is the most short-sighted and desperate act a University can make.

It is necessary to do research in mathematics, from the theorems themselves. It is important to study for mathematics itself

I fear that the administration does not seem to understand the terrible mistake they are proposing. If this decision is taken, then the University of Leicester will no longer be taken seriously as an academic centre, whether by prospective students or anyone else. Furthermore, Pure Mathematics underpins all areas of scientific research, and that certainly includes computer science and AI.

Science will collapse without pure mathematics. Representation theory has applications in quantum computing. Research in pure mathematics often is advance of practical applications.
