We need pure math and science. There are numerous examples of how foundational they are to future innovation.

This is disgraceful.

This is a shockingly short-sighted plan. Research cannot be reduced to only those areas that garner easy funding.

What kind of University doesn't have the ambition to pursue research into pure mathematics?

As a former post grad student this is untenable and an attack on education itself.

No help if made redundant but at least you will no longer be working for total idiots.

That University doesn’t understand what math is about

Research in maths is of fundamental importance to help understand the complexity in the life sciences, build models, and predict deviations thereof

All of the hardest data science problems today will only be solved by advances made by pure mathematicians

Pure mathematics and it´s undestanding is relevant for the development of new methods and tools in the fields of data science and computational modelling. At RWTH Aachen we realized that and the master programm Data Science - which I cocreated - is a joint project of the math & computer science department and includes mandatory pure math courses.

When I read about this I thought it was a fake news, it sounds unbelievable!

I am a computational mathematician and I have research grants with pure analysts. The distinction between pure and applied Mathematics is utterly artificial. Pursuing this plan would just harm Mathematics in Leicster across the board, including modelling and data science.

Isn't it the role of universities to offer a flourishing environment to all fields of academics?

Applied Mathematics heavily relies on Pure Mathematics. And AI, computational modelling and data science are applied mathematics, at least if pursued scientifically.

For centuries pure mathematics has played a central role in scientific advances. Any university which hopes to be respectable in research and teaching in the sciences must have a strong mathematics group. In particular, computation, modeling, and data science are all rapidly developing fields. If the University of Leicester cuts their programs in pure mathematics, then the quality of their programs and the esteem of the university in the broader community will quickly fall behind their peers. The current proposal is short-sighted and self-defeating. It should be binned.

Mathematics is amazing and should be more respected it's the foundation of the universe and need more reasearch
