From experience and understanding of the industrial urgencies and challenges it is a rethink of the teaching of Pure Mathematics that is essential. Teach students how to create novel Mathematics to deal with complexity in Reality- but that takes commitment and vision!
It is absurd to shut down your Pure Maths department and jump on the trendy AI bandwagon. Please pause and reflect carefully.

mathematical research has enabled the world we currently live in - the Riemann zeta function and other prime number research enable online banking/shopping
you're not going to successfully examine AI and data science without solid mathematical skill such as matrix maniplulation and complex numbers!!

Big date requires a lot of very good math, pure math, boolean harmonic analysis as for example in O'Donnell's book. Not to mention that the direction of quantum learning is solidly based on a very good pure math., results from theoretical computer science that use pure harmonic analysis, hypercontractivity in particular, lots of pure probability. It is insanely stupid and very parochial--no wonder though--to suggest dropping pure math. from the curriculum. But Leicester knows better of course.

I was Erasmus in the Maths degree in 2002. how do they think AI and other disciplines progress? Because of the theory developed by pure mathematicians.

“Shaping for excellence” is impossible without good pure math group. Obviously, the VC is not qualified to manage a university. The proposal gains nothing but shame on U Leicester.

I have obtained a PhD in Mathematics from Texas A&M University, and held positions in Microsoft, Google, Cadence, and now Roblox. I have worked with AI, computational modeling and data science.
Nothing was more applicable than the skills I obtained in pure mathematics research.
The following statement is self-contradictory:
"..to ensure a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science requires ceasing research in Pure Mathematics "
Research in pure mathematics *is* a big part of AI, computational modeling, and data science.
That the University fails to recognize this reflects poorly on the University.

Much of theoretical Computer Science is actually Pure Mathematical in nature and requires and requires results and require research results from Pure Mathematics. Downgrading the Pure Mathematics team would not actually shape or increase excellence and in fact would quite the opposite. This proposal will severely damage the reputation of the Department and has al the signs of being an ill thought out managerial decision with little or no understanding of the academic consequences of what is proposed.

There is no AI without PURE mathematics (very recent example: the resolution of the sensitivity conjecture). There is no computational modeling without PURE mathematics, because modeling itself requires an axiomatization of the object/process being modelled before any computations that are made could be reasonably argued for. There is no "data science" without PURE mathematics, because statistics relies on probability theory and measure theory; because clustering relies on combinatorics and non-Euclidean geometry; because network science relies on Algebraic Topology.... In fact, there is no "dirty" mathematics without PURE mathematics either. There is no quantum computation, no electronics, no sub-atomic physics OR astrophysics without...PURE mathematics. I call on University of Leicester VC to resign, in acknowledgement of their shamefully uninformed proposals and reasoning.
