The proposed action will be seen by the academic community at large, and not just those in the affected subject areas, as a betrayal by the university's administration of its academic staff. It will seriously damage the university's ability to attract talented scholars, and will ultimately undermine its standing as a centre of excellence in research and teaching. I strongly urge the university administration to reconsider.

On a scientific level this is the epidemie of short sited action. On the human level, mathematics is an expression of the soul, this is an afront to mankind. I can assure you that China's approach to the future of AI is to increase mathematical research at every level.

I very strongly oppose this attack on academic health and free will. Pure Mathematics is the foundation of quantitative science that may not be immediately obvious to business managers but they should take advice from people who know.

Pure maths is probably the most important field in "STEM" and is the foundation upon which all other sciences are built. "Removing pure math to do more AI" is actual madness.
