The stated claim that "continuing research in AI, computational modelling, etc requires ceasing research in Pure Mathematics" is ridiculous...AI, like any scientific field, relies on pure mathematics and could not exist without it. I urge the university to rethink its decision.

This would be a very short-sighted decision that would have a negative impact on the strength of the university as a whole.

Eliminating pure maths research is like fighting famine by grinding all the seed corn into flour. How preposterous to claim to advance AI, which mathematicians are working hard to understand, drawing upon theorems by Baksalary, Neuberger, Vershynin, Danskin, Shiffman and Zelditch, Johnson and Lindenstrauss, Leuker, etc.

Disgraceful and blind decision! AI needs ‘pure maths’ support as any other science discipline!

Another indication of the corporate and greedy behaviour of managers that run the universities while have nothing to do with science, education or culture. Shame.

Only very general speculations not applied to specific concrete technical matters have allowed the real progress of humanity. Only a short sighted board can stupidly think that pure science, in this case math, can hinder the path toward progress. You should come back to your books to try to remember how was the story, for instance, of the discovery of transistors and how the beginning of that line of research was completely unrelated to practical reasons. The same for electromagnetism...

Dear, any development in applied math is based on pure math. The University should rethink its decision.

The University of Hull did this and regretted it later. This is foolishly short-sighted. Rather ironic that one of their buildings is named after one of the most important pure mathematicians of his generation, Sir Michael Atiyah.

Mathematics, whether pure or applied, is a fundamental science that any series university should have. And to seriously teach Mathematics, you need researchers teaching. The plan to transform the Mathematics department, or part of it, into a teaching-only one will not only harm your students, but your reputation as a serious university, which I considered you to be (I have been external PhD examiner and consider the Maths department at Leicester to be excellent).

The pursuit of pure mathematics is as necessary and important as applied practices. And as history has shown the development of mathematical techniques from the study of pure mathematics can have longer laster and wider ranging applications than applied methods, even if it is not recognised at the time. Forcing research to follow only what is deemed “necessary” or “directly useable” is in the long term detrimental, with discoveries that could be of vital importance to applications not being discovered because of a short sightedness now to think only applications are important. When really the pure and applied research are equally important to each others advances in knowledge, and one without the other will stagnate!

Fundamental research is essential to the development of society. Pure mathematics is the least expensive form of fundamental research. This is vandalism that will irreversibly damage the University of Leicester's reputation.
