Science and computing rely on mathematical theory - even those who don't appreciate the value of mathematics for its own sake must surely realise how damaging these cuts will be.

This proposal is an unprecedented act of barbarism that will destroy the reputation of the university and the morale among its academics for a long time. It is cruel with respect to the excellent staff at Leicester. Should this proposal become reality, then it would be a shame for Leicester and the UK as a whole.

This is a staggeringly short-sighted decision, and I hope that the administrators at Leicester will recognise this in time to reconsider.

Pure Mathematics provides the foundations and advances for AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science and much more. It's short-sighted to think that Pure Mathematics is redundant or irrelevant.

The number of examples where basic mathematics has almost immediately led to very applied breakthroughs is endless. Ceasing basic maths is short-sighted and highly naive.

A strong maths department is vital for any university with science curricula. It takes decades to build a department of the level reached in Leicester, it is crucial to preserve it!

A callous, short-sighted, self-harming proposal.
