This plan must be opposed vigorously and reversed, it signals the start of the decline of the University of Leicester. Fundamental science must be protected.

The idea that a university is worthy of the name without pure maths research activity is absolutely astonishing.
Shutting down difficult subjects and ending research in them is the logical conclusion of the absurdity of the tuition fee market system initiated by the ConDem 2010 Government.
Of course to avoid logic you can always abolish mathematics.

It is incredibly short-sighted to believe that pure mathematics is somehow `irrelevant' in today's world. Pure mathematics underpins the mathematical sciences generally and we have seen time and again that today's abstraction is tomorrow's key application. Don't go ahead with this proposal to shut down research in pure mathematics at Leicester.

The research in pure mathematics is vital for science, especially now with applications in AI, computational modelling, data science, etc.

I hugely benefited from Pure Maths modules I took at Leicester many years ago. A University which closes down Pure Maths research -- a foundation of scholarly endeavour for thousands of years -- is likely to lose far more from the long term damage to its reputation than it saves financially. Please don't do this.

Mathematics is the cornerstone of AI, where a majority of advances in the field are led by mathematicians (ICLR, NeurIPS, AISTATS). The VC strategy is akin to building a house on a sandy beach at low tide.

Reconsider the decision. Pure Mathematics is basic research that remains available forever.

It is appalling that a university can claim that pure maths has no space in their staff. The proposed solution is even more appalling and definitely unacceptable.

I was a PhD student in the department back in 2016 when the administration tried this the first time. To see them attempt it again, and during a global pandemic this time, is abhorrent. I think the fact that the academics at Leicester have managed to remain world leading researchers in the past 4 years after the undue stress they were put under is commendable. Of course, as many others have pointed out, ditching pure mathematics in favor of AI and data science is also an absurd straw man.
