Pure Mathematics produces important results that are useful for many areas. As a physicist mathematicians are irreplaceable colleagues.

What kind of short-sighted idiot, and what kind of university, would be so blind to the importance of pure math?

I am not pure mathematician, but if the university at the caliber of Leicester stops to teach the value of abstract mathematical thinking, you will lose talents and culture even if you get money from students.

This will hurt recruitment and retention for at least a decade. Even if you back down now, damage has already been done.

It is a severe misbelieve that mathematics is a closed set of knowledge that can be taught by anyone who understood a sufficient part of it. Pure mathematics is an active area of research and as every other science, it deserves to be taught by people conducting active research.

I fully support this petition. This is a truly short sighted proposal. I work close to applications and benefit every day from pure research carried out 200 years ago as well as 10 years ago.

This is an astonishingly short sighted decision which will fundamentally undermine the ability of the department to deliver on it's more applied activities. My sympathies and solidarity to the effected staff and students.

Without any understanding of linear algebra, convergence theorems, etc., AI "Research" will soon be a stab in the dark. Please reconsider your decision.

So you want to “ensure a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science” by cutting pure maths? Seems you have no clue.

Even though I don't do completely pure mathematics, I use works from pure mathematics to justify the rigor of my work. It is the only way to guarantee the research work is trustworthy.
