There would no be AI without pure math. There would be no data science without pure math. There will be no [insert important future application here] without pure math.

Pure math has to be learned from the experts not from practicioners. Knowing what is behind the popular applied fields is essential for further innovation.

Pure Mathematics and fundamental research in pure mathematics is the backbone on which future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science rests. An esteemed University like yours can not be ignorant and oblivious of this fact.

Only the most short-sighted administration would move to eliminate pure mathematics.
Congratulations on your efforts to make Leicester a third-rate university.

Mathematic research is the backbone of, among other things, Artificial Intelligence, and without it all you will get will be a spineless research.
It takes decades to build a team, a department, expertise. It takes minutes to tear them down, but then it will take decades again to rebuild.

This will make the entire university a disgrace. If they administrators are genuinely foolish enough to believe that this move will improve their research and training in AI/data science then they need to be replaced.
