Mathematics is not redundant

If this goes forward, the other parts of maths will be financially dead in the water in a few years. Some of the governing accountants will know this. Looks like maths is played here and the actual targets are in other departments.

I am against destroying mathematics anywhere in the world.

Leicester Pure Mathematics is a first rate department. The decision to close it seems spectacularly short-sighted.

Cutting pure mathematics to focus on applied mathematics is incredibly short-sighted. Most of the major developments in applied mathematics and data science have grown out of advances in pure mathematics.

While they are at it, why not shut down other useless programs like theoretical physics, philosophy, anything having to do with art or music, sociology, anthropology, archaeology, and history. BTW what AI researcher or data scientist would want to be known as a professor at a "university" that has jettisoned its pure maths? At FSU much of this sort of research is done by pure mathematicians.

It's a shame already that we have to sign to prove this. Mathematics is essential.

Substantial advances in stats, machine learning and signal processing require sophisticated and solid mathematical foundations.

I used to study and work in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Leicester from 2011 to 2018. This is the second time the Executive Board tried to (partially) ease the Department of Mathematics by saying pure maths are useless... This is definitely a shame! I can not imagine any reasonable students want to go to a university without pure maths to study the AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science! If the pure maths are eased because "somebody" says it is "useless", it shows that the university is no longer universal. The research-oriented university becomes the "Degree Certificate-oriented factory". This is the worst policy ever in the past 100 years of the University of Leicester.

A common disbelief causes damage once again. Unless the VC aims at making Leicester a third-rate University: in that case the decision is perfect.

This seems a ludicrous decision.

A maths department is incomplete without research in pure mathematics.

It is not easy to develop a tradition in research in pure mathematics. For a university to let it go is like shooting itself in the foot.

There are many branches of mathematics that looked useless for decades till they became fundamental for applications

Kill the foundations to support the latest buzzwords. (And I say that as an AI researcher.) Very bad idea, but plenty of people have already told you that haven't they?
