It would be much better to fund new research by sacking the VC and redirecting their salary to the maths department.

The best way, to my opinion, to fight such a tyranny, is to go for a strike of indefinite time.
The power is in the hands of academic staff.

It is very short-sighted to replace Leicester's mathematics programme by a programme supported only by a small number of faculty who do only teaching and no research.

Insane ! They couldn't have come up with a better plan if their actual goal was to drive their university's reputation and academic standing into the ground. Unbelievable.

Aside from the administrators, who actually wants this? I can't imagine that a single scientist in the country would be in favour of defunding pure mathematics, for the reasons many other comments here have outlined.
My condolences go to all staff and students at the university who have been affected by this. Here's hoping they change their minds.

Pure mathematics is a valuable subject for its own sake, and it also lies at the base of science and technology, which would not exist in its current form without mathematics.

Embarrassing, non-sensical move by pen pushing bureaucrats without a slightest idea how the modern world works. Today maths is more in demand than ever and this will only continue and get stronger as we advance through the 21st century.

Based on my 10+ years experiences, pure math can develop some very useful theoretical tools for a lot of popular topics such as AI, 5G. So, we should support pure math research.

Worse than shortsighted, blind to the importance of math research to the sciences .

Pure mathematics is fundamental to all areas of science, and engineering, and liberal arts in general. It is very short sighted to try to do away with it. I urge you to reconsider this terrible decision.

The logic behind this decision had to be totally clockwork. It's outlandish to get rid of maths and try to develop exactly the kind of science that is rooted in maths.
