Mathematics is the center of all Science, and so unbelievable to be thought of as being “redundant”

This is not merely short-sighted, it is pure ignorance. The administrative "leadership" of the University of Leicester have disgraced and embarrassed themselves merely for suggesting such a completely idiotic idea. I'm used to hearing genuine surprise from some of my less mathematically aware friends about how fundamental pure maths is for almost every aspect of our daily lives, but for university administrators to not be aware of this is beyond comprehension.

Going into data science while pruning pure mathematics sounds to me like a bad joke.

Hundreds of years of pure mathematics researches, which have produced fundamental effects in everyday life, prove that this idea is completely wrong.

Pure mathematics is fundamental to everything listed in the desired future research identity of Leicester.

It takes decades and centuries for University to gain a reputation. But only a quick ignorant decision like this one to loose it overnight.

I can offer a better plan: lay off all administrators and rehire just 3 secretaries to record the decisions of the Academic Council when they need to be put in writing. I suspect it will be way more beneficial both economically and scientifically than the current proposal. If that is not immediately feasible, just make the top administrators read and recite 3 times the old fable about a Pig and an Oak Tree. That may help a bit too...

Basic/Fundamental Science is the foundation of Applied Science, even if it has no immediate applications.

All areas of mathematics are important; not only applications!

You did realise in 2016 that it was a stupid idea. It is even more so now. The damage to the reputation of University of Leicester will be huge. Would you consider applying there for a job, if your department can be shut down from one day to another?

Students in the mathematical sciences need to be taught and inspired by researchers in pure mathematics as well as applied mathematics.

Your decision completely ignore the way fundamental research and progress of knowledge worjw, which is stupide for a université.
