Computers, cryptography, and most modern physical theories would not have been possible without pure mathematical research. Cutting pure maths research leads to nothing but technological stagnation.

If you think that AI and data science don't rely on pure maths, you will wind up with rubbish, not applicable maths.

When looking to build a strong university, you need research as well as teaching. Cutting fundamental science like pure mathematics will lead to worse outcomes across the board. I sincerely hope the university reconsiders this decision.

This is a very short-sighted decision. If you want good, engaged teaching, you need a vibrant research culture. When you try to save a few short-term dollars by cutting the latter, you lose the former, and it's incredibly difficult to rebuild.

This is unbelievably short-sighted. You cannot cut fundamental research. It is clear that these decisions are being made by incompetent senior managers who have no understanding of how mathematical research evolves - these senior managers are the people who should be made redundant for the sake of saving costs.

None of the advanced technology advancements today can live without maths. Without research in pure math, technology is like a pond of dead water without source.

The pure mathematicians made my undergraduate experience what it was. I wouldn’t be the mathematician I am today without them. I hope you are all doing well and I hope we can stop this awful move by Leicester.

So short-sighted it's baffling. Another decision from ignorant kinds. With ceasing research in pure mathematics, the thread of excellence is severed. Please reconsider the decision to restore the weave of mastery, or persist in the doomed future you have created.

To cut fundamental research shows the short-sightedness of the university board and the misunderstanding of the natural flow between pure and applied mathematics, which will ultimately bite them in the ass.

Proposals like this is what you get in the modern corporate university where all power has been played into the hands of managers, marketers and bean-counters.
Data science is there only thanks to math.

Pure mathematics is crucial in all areas of applied maths and physical science. You can not have a research identity in AI, computational modeling, or data science without a strong program in pure maths.
