My heart goes to out to everyone affected by this dreadful decision, and so soon after going through the same thing in 2016. If Leicester are to change course we must take concerted action to make clear to them this will hurt their reputation and their bottom line.

Pure mathematics is really important for scientific research in Physics and Economics

No one can successfully predict where the next breakthrough will come from. Many times, the groundwork was laid in pure maths often decades earlier. The integration of ideas across disciplines, especially for important advances, has often been critical and has rarely been predicted.

I believe the University VC's idea is not forward thinking at all. In particular, digitalisation, data science, and some aspects of the other areas that are mentioned as part of their 'research identity" grew in tandem with the theory underpinning them!! I am very surprised that the VC does not realize this.

Mathematics is always relevant, to disagree is a short sighted point of view.

This is, quite frankly, a disgraceful way to treat colleagues. What's more, AI is a fashionable flash-in-the-pan attracting all comers hoping to net the big bucks. This decision sacrifices long term excellence for uncertain short term gain.

You might as well erase the names of Gauss, Riemann, Hilbert, Godel, Weyl, Cartan, Von Neumann, Grothendiek, etc. from history books. But you can not deny the tremendous contributions that these PURE MATHEMATICIANS and many others have had to our understanding of this would. Such short-sightedness is just a hallmark of administrators with big agenda and very little of understanding of how sciences and mathematics work or what education is for that matter. Don't be like that!

I don't understand how Leicester University can still call itself a university after destroying their department of mathematics. If they also proposed to change their name to "Leicester vocational college of data science" then their decision would be more understandable.

Fundamental mathematics is, as well as other fundamental research, the key to future and long-term development. Only people care about immediate interests/needs would ignore it. What a fool!!!

Pire math. has been the foundation of all sciences. To eliminate pure math.program is scientific suicide,

The UK has been trying to destroyed its pure mathematics for a long time, so I am not too hopeful.

It shows a huge ignorance about the importance of mathematics in so many different areas and in different ways. Leicester is also reportedly proposing to cut the study of English literature. In the longer run, universities thinking in this way will cease to have a serious intellectual function, but that's what happens when knowledge is no more than a 'market' as far as policy makers are concerned.

Where do you think all that AI, computational modelling, digitalisation, and data science sprung out from and is based upon? The people who made this decision clearly haven't studied anything based upon logical thinking. One wonders if they could've benefited from a proper mathematical education.
